Pilates for the Older Person

More and more studies are showing that even a modest amount of exercise helps you live longer, as well as staying fitter and looking younger.

I have found that many people do want to continue to exercise as they become older but are put off if they feel a class is too strenuous for them. Consequently, I have started a more low level Pilates and Stretching class on Wednesday at 10.30-11.30am at St Catherine’s Village Hall.

I have just completed the Body Control Pilates course ‘Pilates for the Older Person’ It was a helpful reminder for me of the exercises that are appropriate for people with conditions such as:

  1. Arthritis
  2. Osteoporosis
  3. Back, hip, knee and shoulder problems
  4. Balance problems
  5. Parkinson’s Disease
  6. Multiple sclerosis
  7. Cancer

When people have many of these conditions, they may not feel able to exercise but often it is very helpful, both physically and mentally. One to one lessons may be a necessary first step to give someone the confidence to attend a class.

If you need to know more, please either e-mail, or ring and discuss your situation with me.

Seventeen years ago I had never heard of Pilates. Three successive pregnancies had led to a chronic back problem. Medical intervention gave only temporary relief. It was Pilates that solved my problem for good.
